Yayoi Kusama died in a Tokyo hospital on 14 August at age 97, her company Yayoi Kusama Inc said in a statement. The Matsumoto-born artist worked from the 1950s into the 2020s, producing polka-dot paintings, phallic soft sculptures, performance pieces and her signature Infinity Mirror Rooms that drew huge international audiences. Kusama lived for decades in a psychiatric hospital but continued to paint until her final days, the statement said. Her 1960s work included the large impasto "infinity net" paintings and 1963 soft sculptures of fabric-stuffed phallic forms, and she later said many of her ideas were appropriated by white male artists. Kusama sold an early infinity net in 1962 to Frank Stella and Donald Judd for $75, and her White No 28 fetched $7.1 million at auction in 2014. Her 2024 exhibition in Australia became the most popular show in that country’s history. The company said it will carry forward Kusama’s wishes and continue to bring hope and strength through art around the world.
