U.S.-Canada trade war escalates as Canada unveils retaliatory tariffs
NEW: Mayor of Brampton, Ontario warns of a "permanent structural break" in the Canadian-U.S. relationship because of Trump's trade war "Permanent" =======>
Scott as a Dual 🇺🇲🇨🇦 citizen, most Americans have no idea how much they are detested and not just by 🇨🇦 but by most of the World. The divide is so large that US exports will be crushed with a Global Boycott of imported US Brands. The pain for US Consumers will be well beyond 🇨🇦.
Yes, permanent. Why go back to an abusive relationship ?
That word matters because trade relationships are held together by expectations as much as tariffs. Once businesses and governments stop treating the border as dependable, rebuilding trust becomes far harder than removing a duty.
Accurate assessment. The United States was sold the America First lie and is now reaping the actual America Alone, we all got.
Yes , as I had been saying: even if JesusChrist comes and bocomes the president of the US there is a fine line that was crossed and never had been before, it was unthinkable and leaders around the world consider that trump is a symptom not the cause. The US has lost all the little credibility left
Putin’s investment in a moron is paying high dividends, but Canada, México, and the rest of the world are finding other trading partners. When the USA grows out of this bullying fascist cult, they can try to regain the community of nations’ respect.
As @charlieangus104.bsky.social pointed out, the list of targeted tariffs the Carney gov’t is responding to Trump’s #TradeWar with, is brilliant in its precision. We need to keep our powder dry on the big guns & not blow our load all at the beginning. Iran used that strategy. It’s a good one
I know it's tempting to blast away but as other folks have pointed out we don't really have the refinery capacity right now. But potash would be an easy target. Or natural gas. I'm suggesting maybe start with a 2% export tax?
I don’t even know what the tariffs are that Canada wants to impose, but I feel pretty strongly that they won’t change their mind like TACO, so there’s that…..
Is it too soon for Doug Ford to rename the Ashbridges Bay Sewage Treatment Plant in Toronto "Donald Trump Lake"? www.grahambuilds.com/ashbridges-b...
Agreed. Give them all a little taste of things to come, and live in it for awhile. Apply more pressure if necessary, but keep that big gun on reserve in case we need it.
Its actually very well thought out and id say it was being worked on long ago, just in case. Most if not all of the items have a viable Canadian option.
That is one hell of a list.
"Trump has now spent a year and a half throwing rocks into the rivers of world commerce, only to find trade flowing over and around them" The @alanbeattie.bsky.social lesson is applicable to Trump but also Democrats and the EU who think they can design better rocks... www.ft.com/content/e5fe...
Modern trade flows are highly resilient to shocks, their billions of individual nodes adding up to a rather robust system. Also a problematic one for example in the powers given to the largest companies. But that's not going to be tackled without understanding. bsky.app/profile/davi...
Trump may indeed be throwing rocks, along with his childish tantrums when his rock throwing doesn’t work, but the bigger question is whose rocks is he throwing and for what purpose? Because it’s practically universally accepted that what he’s doing is of no benefit to anyone, certainly not the US.
And the rocks that the UK places actually have the wrong effect e.g. reducing EV imports from China, has increased fossil car imports from China - see all the Jaecoo Range Rover copies recently arrived on our roads.
I am aware it's not really the point, but damn the photo in this @alanbeattie.bsky.social story! 😀
Key point in this: if estimated GDP reduction of 6-8% didn't cause UK to immediately reverse Brexit, hard to see why Canada would bow down to US over an increase in Canada’s average US tariff of 1.9% and permanent reduction of GDP of 0.2%.
