Paramount Pictures has green-lit a sequel to the 1990 racing film Days of Thunder starring Tom Cruise with Anne Hathaway joining as his co-lead, and the studio set the release date for June 2, 2028. Tom Cruise announced the project in a post on X Aug. 29 with a photo of him and Hathaway beside a stockcar at Daytona International Speedway; the car displays Cole Trickle's namerail and the words "Days of Thunder" and "Summer 2028". Variety reports the follow-up will be shot for IMAX screens, with Jonathan Levine directing and Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper producing; Will Staples is credited as screenwriter. Per USA Today, Hathaway will play a team owner and engineer while Cruise reprises his role as Cole Trickle. Filmmakers Levine and Staples attended the Quaker State 400 at EchoPark Speedway in July and several current NASCAR drivers, including Chase Briscoe and Denny Hamlin, said they have talked with the production and expect it to raise awareness for the sport. The original 1990 film was directed by Tony Scott, featured a score by Hans Zimmer, earned a Best Sound Academy Award nomination, and grossed $157.9 million worldwide on a $60 million budget.
