Crop Art at the State Fair draws huge lines, locals call for a gallery

Crop Art at the Minnesota State Fair is the fair’s seed-and-agrarian-material art exhibit, currently drawing very long lines and calls to relocate it to a museum or a dedicated building. Today's submissions include political resistance pieces such as anti-ICE seed art, a Minneapolis/Guernica crop art piece, and a commissioned portrait of Marym Mack by Liz Schreiber. Visitors also point out small standout displays like a simple but powerful whistle piece and community favorites like quilts on a stick. Organizers and locals are proposing moves to the MIA, Walker, or Minnesota Historical Society, and a post notes a post-fair show at Can Can Wonderland after September 14.

It would be great if all the anti-ICE crop art, fine art, and fiber arts and crafts pieces from the 2026 Fair could be gathered together for a combined free exhibit at the MIA. Select pieces would go to MN Historical Society.

I was there at the same time as the woman who made the crochet figure on the left. Her creation is actually wearing a rebel loon super hero costume under the robe! She wasn’t able to display the full thing but she shared a peek at the photos on her phone. So very cool.

Minnesota is a convenient place to live! People here are used to almost everything being incredibly easy to get to and do. More busses or bike parking would be great! Build a dang train right to the Fairgrounds! But maybe there's no fix for hundreds of thousands of people wanting to see the crop art

I'm not trying to say people shouldn't try or that it's wrong/dumb to discuss ideas. I just that if the vicious capitalists at the Walt Disney Corporation can't solve lines or congestion, maybe we shouldn't get too torqued about it.

For me this year it was worth it to be surrounded by the scale of it and the conversation. Also there were some great pieces that used texture and dimension in a way that doesn’t come across in a photo.

Hot take: Crop Art has outgrown the State Fair. The MIA, Walker, or MNHS should be lining up to host a 6-8 week crop art exhibit. Or it becomes MNs best roadside attraction, ala the Corn Palace.
