One Nation wins WA by-election, prompts bipartisan alarm in Australia
Labor ran a former federal staffer who left politics to join Woodside's government relations team back in WA. One Nation is similarly pro-fossil fuel. Woodside, essentially, has covered all bases here.
I'm sure this outcome will be read a hundred different ways, but it is another reminder that when centre-left parties punch left and pander right, they lose. Voters can see the party doesn't have any principles, and if the trajectory is rightward, they might as well vote for the real deal.
It’s one giant Uniparty. Only the Greens is NOT in the Uniparty.
Management services are running them now same as education and policing. You can make recidivists of all criminals, managers, politicians and turn people conservative. Just by wedging criminality. Then come in offer consultancy and a service. The invitation to be part of team, reward and protection.
It's ONE seat in the equivalent of bum-fk Alabama, but One Nation egos will be out of control, convinced this means they're going to rule the universe next. The next year and a half is going to be nasty. 🙄 #auspol www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08...
True, I wonder how long this elected PHON MP will hang around before they defect.
PHON are going to see Secret Harbour as the latest in a string of victories: New England, Farrer, South Australia. Agree their egos will be out of control.
And the Labor candidate was a friggin Woodside lobbyist!
How before they quit the party?
We underestimate the appeal of ON to a large chunk of the Australian electorate at our peril.
Blame One Nation's win on Labor. Labor, you're not going to win by being right wing & racist like One Nation. Labor, you're not going to win by running a candidate who is a gas lobbyist from Woodside. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08... #auspol
Labor hasn’t been the Progresive voice since Kerr sacked Whitlam.
People in WA love the gas industry don't they? Even Kate Chaney loves the gas industry. She supported Woodside's NW Shelf extension and Burrup Hub redevelopment "as long as the approval requirements are met". What am I missing?
How people saw the shitstorm that is America and thought "we want that too" will never not astound me. 🤦🏼♀️ #auspol
Has anyone seen Albo and Pauline in the same room? #OrangeWigAndRestingCatsBum #WhoCouldTell #LiterallyAllTheSameSideOfAPooCoveredCoin #auspol
Parachuting in a would-be career politician into a "safe" Labor seat was always going to be seen for what it was. WA Labor's now basically indistinguishable from the Libs - both are shills for mining - so people are looking for something different. The problem is, in this case, it's One Nation.
Worse than that. She was literally a Woodside lobbyist prior.
Parliamentary Labor needs to listen - and respond- to the views and needs of their members. Loyalists have had enough!
Labor were parachuting an oil & gas lobbyist into what was a safe seat for them. O&G lobbyists are on the nose & deserve to be defeated. Unfortunately in this case a party owned by O&G companies
One Nation wins its first lower house seat in WA: Secret Harbour, which takes in Labor bastions Rockingham/North Mandurah. < t.co/fd6J5FGbOq > This follows ON inroads in battler suburbs north of Adelaide at the SA election in March. 🚨Fair warning, Labor. Look after your own🚨 #auspol
Both Labor and LNP have brought us here, we will not forget
Labor are the party of the Oligarchs and Corporations. Labor has been drifting away from their socialist roots since Hawke. Party politics is not democracy.
The "battlers" are going to find out what battling really is if they get us a One Nation government.
They are looking after their own - corporations and billionaires. #F*ckTheDuopoly #F*ckOneNation #VoteGreen #Auspol
My brain did a triple somersault with pike, hearing voters arriving to vote at the Secret Harbour, By-election polling station, responding to reporters Qs, “I’m voting one nation, bc I believe it cares for battlers!” FFS! A leader that has at every opportunity voted against bills to help battlers 🙄.
ALP had better start reading the room . A woodside lobbyist ????? what were they thinking ?????
Labor has spent the last decades embracing liberalism. Their language is all liberal Liberalism tells people the fall of the material conditions is because of their own efforts. So when they try hard and things get worse they search for alternative explanations. One Nation offers a systemic answer
Luke Herdegen wins the seat of Secret Harbour in a by-election for One Nation. Not unexpected in that demographic, but still concerning. #auspol
concerning is an understatement of course sitting here in victoria dreading the upcoming state election, while also wondering how much further my birth town of albany has regressed
Yes a not surprising result given the demographic but the visceral hatred of Labor in the electorate crossing over from tinkering incrementalist timid govt. style of federal labor, selling out to corporate & foreign interests also influences peoples vote. #auspol
Hardly a shock. The boguns in Secret Harbour finally have someone to vote for that represents their stupidity #auspol
