NASA Roman Telescope launches aboard SpaceX Falcon Heavy

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched Aug 30 from Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy, beginning a climb toward the Sun, Earth L2 point on a roughly three-month transit. The $4.3 billion observatory carries a 300-megapixel infrared camera that will image a field wider than the full Moon and survey billions of galaxies, hundreds of black holes and dusty planet-forming disks. NASA and astronomers expect Roman to expand the known exoplanet tally from the current several thousand to more than 100,000 by using microlensing and other survey techniques. Roman’s wide, deep infrared maps will trace the distribution of dark matter via gravitational lensing, measure cosmic expansion with specific supernova observations, and probe dark energy’s effects across cosmic time. A U.S. Space Force official said the launch-day weather forecast was 50 percent favorable; backup launch windows were set for the next two mornings. Commissioning begins while Roman is en route to L2 and its data releases will drive follow-on studies of galaxy evolution, dark matter mapping and an enlarged exoplanet census.
