The Met Office has released the UK, Ireland and Netherlands list of storm names for the 2026, 2027 season, which begins on 1 September. The alphabetical list opens with Austen, Boelo and Chloe, followed by Dano and Evelyn, and continues through 21 names compiled jointly with Met Éireann and KNMI. The names were drawn from public nominations gathered in 2025, more than 40,000 submissions in total, and include personal dedications such as Austen nominated for Austen Nagle, the first director of the Irish Meteorological Service. Chloe was selected after being nominated more than 130 times, including by a mother who said her five-year-old is “fascinated by the weather,” and Ivy was nominated in honour of a nine-month-old Labrador described as “the absolute destructor.” Storms are named by the Met Office, Met Éireann or KNMI when forecasts indicate medium or high impacts likely to trigger amber or red warnings, with naming intended to provide clear, consistent public messaging. Any remnant of an Atlantic tropical cyclone retains its original name, for example ex-Hurricane Erin, which became Storm Erin in August 2025.
