European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the Leipzig airport attempted attack involved "military grade" material and accused Russian operatives of carrying it out on EU soil, pledging increased pressure and new sanctions on Russia. Germany has concluded Russia was responsible for the incident and announced a series of measures, including closure of a consulate and a Russian cultural centre in Berlin. The EU has summoned Russia's top diplomat in Brussels to address the episode, and Finland's Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said Helsinki has summoned the Russian ambassador. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul were reported to be preparing a public briefing naming Moscow as behind the attempted drone attack on a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle airport. Von der Leyen framed the episode as part of a broader shift in European security, saying the bloc will not tolerate such attacks and will act in coordination with partners.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt alleged Russia's involvement in the drone incident at Leipzig Airport in early August. As a result of the sanctions, German authorities have terminated the agreement on the operation of the Russian House in Berlin, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced. His words are quoted by the Berliner Morgenpost . Furthermore, German authorities intend to tighten controls on Russian entry into the country and expand the list of sanctions against Russian citizens. The Russian Consulate General in Bonn will be closed starting September 18. The German Foreign Ministry has summoned Russia's Ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechayev, Johann Wadephul added. "The meeting is taking place right now," the minister said. A drone carrying explosives was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport on the night of August 5. According to German media, the drone was located near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane carrying ammunition. German law enforcement agencies have not ruled out the possibility of sabotage. The Russian Embassy in Germany called the incident a provocation.
