What strikes me in the dozens of tributes to Gloria Steinem on social media is how she used her status to reach out to so many women, to bring them together, to make sure their ideas were heard and valued, to unite them in a cause. She understood that there was no change without coalition-building.

I was in awe of Gloria Steinem and intimidated prior to speaking on a panel with her about the documentary Valerie Red-Horse Mohl and I made about Steinem’s close friend, Wilma Mankiller. She was eloquent and thoughtful, but also so supportive of us and our film. I will never forget her kindness.
