Big Ten releases replay video defending Michigan, Western Michigan ending

sportsSep 6, 2026341,390

The Big Ten released video and a formal statement saying Western Michigan safety Micah Davis touched Bryce Underwood's Hail Mary from an out-of-bounds spot with one second showing, prompting officials to put one second back on the clock and allow Underwood to find JJ Buchanan for the game-winning score as Michigan beat Western Michigan 13-12. The league cited NCAA rule 4-2-3-a, which stops the clock the instant a loose ball contacts anything outside the boundary line, and said all broadcast cameras tied to its replay system were synchronized using a strobe system 85 minutes before kickoff. NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay pushed back on air, arguing the ball was still in the air when the broadcast clock reached zero and suggesting the replay booth video may have run on a different sync than the network feed. Western Michigan coach Lance Taylor said from the sideline he saw the clock pass zero before Davis touched the ball. Western Michigan president Russ Kavalhuna said the university would work through the Mid-American Conference to ask the Big Ten whether further review was possible. One national college football columnist accused Big Ten officials of manipulating the result to protect Michigan, noting the stakes around the matchup and the teams' financial relationship. Michigan improved its record and will host No. 10 Oklahoma next week; Western Michigan fell to 0-9 all-time against Michigan.

This Hail Mary situation is EXACTLY why all the replay review situations need to be public and transparent. There has been no explanation. Big Ten added it this year, but only for Friday games.

I think the Big Ten is going to have something on this soon and it's going to be about the game clock we saw on TV vs. the game clock as it was "supposed" to be run. The bar for this to be satisfactory to reasonable people is going to be pretty high
