Star Trek marks 60th anniversary; Canada aired The Man Trap on Sept 6, 1966

Star Trek: The Original Series turns 60, but its first North American broadcast came two days before the U.S. premiere. CTV in Canada aired episode 1, "The Man Trap," on September 6, 1966, while NBC marked the series launch on September 8, 1966. Philip "Pip" Wedge, then at CTV and now executive director of the Canadian Communications Foundation, says CTV scheduled the show at 7:30 p.m. Eastern to capture a younger audience and that the series was a bigger success in Canada than in the United States. Wedge attributes CTV’s early airing to routine pre-release rights and says Murray Chercover likely approved the U.S. acquisition on a buying trip to Los Angeles. Wedge notes Star Trek never ranked in the U.S. Top 50 and only reached a third season there, and he adds that simultaneous substitution rules were not in effect until 1972. Those scheduling and rights practices explain how a Canadian network could beat an American network to viewers with an American series.
