Kimi Antonelli wins Italian Grand Prix from 19th on grid

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza after charging from 19th on the grid to pass team-mate George Russell with three laps remaining, extending his championship lead to 66 points. The 20-year-old recovered from a penalty that forced him to the back after using extra engine parts, moving into contention within 16 laps and using a mid-race stop for fresh tyres under a virtual safety car to erase a 15-second deficit. The race was red-flagged early when Ferrari's Charles Leclerc lost control at the Parabolica and hit the barriers; Leclerc was unhurt. Max Verstappen finished third, with McLaren's Lando Norris fourth and Oscar Piastri fifth, while Lewis Hamilton came home sixth. Antonelli's result is the second-biggest recovery to win a Grand Prix, behind John Watson's 22nd-to-first at Long Beach in 1983. Antonelli said, "I did not expect. Unbelievable. I am so happy, I could never imagine being here today," as the Monza crowd acclaimed the first Italian winner of the Italian Grand Prix in six decades.
