Bird of the Day, theme 'Bird Buddies'

natureSep 8, 202625414,478

Today's Bird of the Day is the #BirdBuddies theme, a daily challenge asking for two different bird species sharing the same space, with an alternate prompt of #BirdsInGreen. Submissions show wildlife photography and field shots of mixed-species interactions, quiet shorebird pairings, and closeups of green-plumaged songbirds. Concrete examples include a Black-necked Stilt and an American Avocet with their reflections in the LA River, a Wood duck paired with a Purple Gallinule, and a Great Blue Heron being dive-bombed by a Lapwing near its nest. Also look for small green-plumaged entries such as a Goldcrest and a Green Crowned Brilliant Hummingbird under the alternate BirdsInGreen tag.

A group of Bar-tailed Godwits and smaller Dunlins forage together in shallow coastal water, their reflections shimmering beneath them. The larger godwits probe the water with their long, slightly upturned bills while the Dunlins feed alongside them, all bathed in soft golden light.

A Goldcrest perched on a small branch of a hawthorn tree in the bright sunshine. The bird is right of centre of the shot, facing the camera and turned to the left slightly so that its front and part of the left side are visible. The bird is tiny and round with a fine, needle like bill. It has an olive-green back and grey-green to buff white underparts. It has a vibrant yellow crown stripe with a thick black border The bird is on a branched stemming from a larger limb, which travels behind the bird in the shot. A vertical branch travels up the left have side int he shot and the background is out of focus vegetation with small dapples of light. The sunshine is shining in from the left and highlighting the bird and the prominent branches.

A photo of an emerald starling, or iris glossy starling (Lamprotornis iris). It's a medium-sized starling perched on a brown branch, facing left, its head tilted slightly upward. Its plumage is a brilliant, glossy, iridescent green overall, with violet cheek patches that have some small specks of blue. It has a slightly downcurved, thin dark bill and dark eyes. The background is blurred brownish and blue-green foliage, in slightly weird cool-toned lighting because it's at a zoo.

A Scaly-Breasted Lorikeet looks a little perturbed whilst sitting in the midst of a Bottle Brush tree. Surrounding the Lorikeet are red bottle flowers. The Scaly-breasted Lorikeet is a small parrot native to eastern Australia. It is characterised by its vibrant green plumage with yellow scales, red beak, and red-orange eyes. This species is commonly found in coastal regions, ranging from Cape York in Queensland to Wollongong in New South Wales. They often hang out with the Rainbow Lorikeets.

A white-headed woodpecker (black with white head) and hairy woodpecker (black above, white below) are briefly perched opposite of each other with wings spreading on a flowering stalk of a common mullein (Verbascum thapsus). The woodpeckers were eating insect larvae they found in the plant. The white-headed was there first, but left as soon as the hairy arrived. The plant grew near the edge of a lake, which is seen in the background.
