Bird of the Day, theme 'Bird Buddies'

Today's Bird of the Day is the daily community event with the theme Bird Buddies, a challenge to show two different bird species sharing the same space, with an alternate theme BirdsInGreen for birds with green plumage. Submissions show direct interactions and peaceful co-occurrences, from conflict scenes to close perching, plus green-plumage portraits for the alt theme. Concrete examples in the gallery include a heron being dive-bombed by a lapwing near its nest, a spoonbill passing a tricolored heron, and a sandhill crane beside a whooping crane. Look also for green-plumage entries such as a mallard drake, a resplendent quetzal, and a Green Crowned Brilliant hummingbird, tagged with #BirdBuddies or #BirdsInGreen.

A group of Bar-tailed Godwits and smaller Dunlins forage together in shallow coastal water, their reflections shimmering beneath them. The larger godwits probe the water with their long, slightly upturned bills while the Dunlins feed alongside them, all bathed in soft golden light.

A Golden-crowned Sparrow and a feisty chickadee. Around feeders, chickadees usually move in and out with lightning speed, carrying off seeds while avoiding confrontations with larger birds (ie: anybody else). But there are always exceptions! #BirdOfTheDay #BirdBuddies #photography #birds

The Scaly-breasted Lorikeet is a small parrot native to eastern Australia. It is characterised by its vibrant green plumage with yellow scales, red beak, and red-orange eyes. This species is commonly found in coastal regions, ranging from Cape York in Queensland to Wollongong in New South Wales. They often hang out with the Rainbow Lorikeets.
