U.S. to ban some Canadian imports, escalating North America trade war

financeSep 9, 202636811

President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed five executive orders that will completely bar imports of certain Canadian goods, including motorcycles, some dairy products and alcoholic beverages, with the measures taking effect later this month. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Washington escalated the trade war because Canada discriminated against American exports and pursued “senseless retaliation” after Ottawa imposed counterduties. Greer said the steps aim to defend American workers and exporters and restore reciprocity in bilateral trade. The Canadian Press reported Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that Canada’s pivot away from the United States will come at a cost while saying the alternative would be worse. The new U.S. bans deepen an economic rift between two long-interlinked trading partners and follow Canada’s latest set of counter tariffs, marking a clear intensification of the dispute. This report was first published September 9, 2026.

This trade war is getting out of hand. Instead of just raising tariffs, now we’re banning Canadian imports like motorcycles and alcohol all together. No one wins in these scenarios. Canada is going to go seek other trading partners and we’re all just going to pay more for everything
