Apple unveiled the A20 Pro at its Surprise and Shine event, its first system-on-chip built on 2nm technology to power the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The A20 Pro uses a six-core CPU with two new supercores Apple says are 20 percent faster alongside four efficiency cores, and all CPU cores integrate neural accelerators for low-latency AI. The GPU uses a seven-core design Apple says can deliver up to 40 percent more performance, while Apple updated its neural accelerators to deliver 2x faster 8-bit floating-point math for advanced on-device AI such as running third-party large language models. Apple added a second Neural Engine for a total of 32 cores and twice the Neural Engine compute, and says memory bandwidth is 50 percent higher thanks to what it calls the widest memory interface ever shipped in an iPhone. The A20 Pro adopts an M-series-inspired package that places the silicon die side by side with memory to remove memory from the SoC thermal path and connect the silicon directly to a next-generation vapor chamber for improved thermal performance. To support the iPhone Duo foldable, the A20 Pro includes a new display engine that drives both displays simultaneously and blends the pixel layout around the under-display camera for a consistent visual experience.
