U.S. Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis ruled Sept. 9 that Andrew and Tristan Tate must remain jailed in the United States while they fight extradition to Britain on new felony charges, including alleged sex trafficking and rape. The 30-page order in the Southern District of Florida denied the defense motion for release, citing the brothers' wealth and frequent international travel as reasons they pose a flight risk. Romanian prosecutors indicted Andrew Tate on Sept. 4 for alleged trafficking of minors, money laundering, sex with a minor and witness tampering, and indicted Tristan Tate for alleged complicity. The Tates, 39 and 38, hold dual U.S. and British citizenship and were arrested by U.S. Marshals in Miami on July 18 after British prosecutors requested their extradition. British authorities say the new Crown Prosecution Service charges involve alleged offenses affecting four victims between July 2010 and August 2017; the brothers also face earlier British rape and human trafficking charges tied to three alleged victims. Britain has until Sept. 16 to submit its full extradition request to the U.S. State Department, and the legal fight over extradition could take several months, meaning the brothers will likely remain jailed through that process.
