World Suicide Prevention Day, theme 'Changing the Narrative on Suicide'

scienceSep 10, 202625248

World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September 2026 continues the triennial theme Changing the Narrative on Suicide, with the call to action Start the Conversation. WHO says suicide remains a major public health challenge, claiming more than 720,000 lives each year and leaving profound social, emotional, and economic harm for families, workplaces, and communities. The 2024, 2026 theme urges challenging harmful myths, reducing stigma, and fostering open, compassionate conversations so people in distress feel able to speak up and seek help. Changing the narrative also demands systemic change, asking governments and institutions to prioritise suicide prevention and mental health by adopting evidence-based strategies and improving access to quality care. WSPD was established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in partnership with WHO and is observed annually to unite communities, organisations, and governments around the prevention goal. WHO and the United Nations link suicide reduction to the Sustainable Development Goals, targeting a one-third reduction in the global suicide mortality rate by 2030.
