Sen. Tim Scott opened President Donald Trump’s Republican midterm convention Wednesday with a loud, animated address that critics and outlets called a meltdown. Scott pulled open his jacket and thumped his chest while shouting “The Democrats’ extreme candidates will rip that heart out of our chests,” and later bellowed “We’re talking about Jeeeeeeeeesus,” elongating the name and praising God as “the king of kings, and the lord of lords, alpha and the omega.” HuffPost and The Independent highlighted the performance’s volume and theatricality and quoted social-media reactions mocking the delivery. Comedian Ben Meiselas and other commentators compared the appearance to a sermon turned spectacle, with critics likening it to an SNL cold open, a Howard Dean, style yell, or cartoonish preaching.
