Bird of the Day, theme 'Birds In Abstract'

natureSep 12, 202621310,835

Today's Bird of the Day event is themed #BirdsInAbstract, a prompt inviting motion blur, obscure angles, and contrasting textures. Entries lean into surreal and painterly looks, with reflections, motion-blurred silhouettes, cropped closeups, and unexpected compositions. Notable posts include an egret seen as a reflection, a tricolored heron bathed in warm golden sunrise glow, and a tufted titmouse captured in a photographic miscue that suggests electricity. Scan the gallery for an anhinga with a fish reflected in the water, a back-view mallard, and a male siskin shaking off rain.

I loved the reflection on this egret.

A photo of two grey herons wading in a bay. The camera has tried to fill in pixels, making it look more like a painting than a detailed photo.

A blur of silhouettes wings and feet and bodies as a flock of birds lands in shallow water reflecting oranges and blues at sunset. They are recognizable as birds if you look closely but also it looks like a bunch of abstract shapes and colors.

A detailed close-up shot of an Australian magpie perched in profile on a textured, warm-toned sandstone rock surface. The bird features a sleek black-and-white plumage pattern, with a prominent white nape and back patch contrasting sharply against its glossy black body and wings. Its dark, sturdy beak points with dirt on it is slightly downward, and its sharp, dark orange eye catches a glint of light. The background is softly out of focus with muted earthy tones and subtle vertical grasses.

An abstract photo of a black phoebe diving straight down with its wings open. It looks a bit like a tropical flower. The top of its head is out of frame. It's blurred by the motion, and there are some bright white streaks. The bird has a green tinge to it due to the lighting. The background is beautiful shades of green and gold blurred bokeh. The light is hitting the bird's left wing beautifully.

Not quite abstract but in this image a barn owl was flying towards me early morning across a field of purple. The very low light meant a very slow shutter speed and also high iso and so the scene and especially its wings are a complete blur!
@ronm123photo.bsky.social92
A black and white photo of a tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) in silhouette, backlit and perched on a very thin branch while holding a feather from a larger bird in its small beak. The swallow is rendered almost entirely black against a soft gray background, while the feather glows bright and white.

A small yellow and white bird, with a black head, sits on a wet branch, in the rain. It is shaking off the rain, and the slow shutterspeed renders it a black-centered yellow twizzle. Streaks of rain can be seen in the background.

This image features a close-up profile of a Eurasian hoopoe, showcasing its distinctive sandy-orange head, sharp black-tipped crest, and long, slender, decurved bill. The bird's dark, circular eye is clearly visible against its pale, buff-colored plumage, while a softly blurred natural background emphasizes the crisp details of its feather textures and prominent crest.
