The Vegas Golden Knights signed captain Mark Stone to a two-year, $18 million contract extension, the team announced Saturday, keeping him under contract through the 2028-29 season. The deal pays Stone $9 million per season, a slightly lower cap hit than his current $9.5 million average annual value, and prevents him from reaching unrestricted free agency next summer. Stone, 34 and entering his ninth season with Vegas and seventh as captain, comes off a 73-point season in 60 games and is widely regarded as one of the NHL’s top defensive wingers and a key play driver at even strength. Health has been a recurring issue for Stone, who turns 35 in May and has missed significant time in prior seasons, but he said at his season-ending news conference that he intends to keep playing. The team projects the extension as good value; Stone will be Vegas’s third-highest-paid player, well below the contracts for Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner. The Golden Knights already show $86.8 million in projected cap hit for 2027-28, the first season of Stone’s extension, with seven forwards, five defensemen and a goalie under contract.
