Bird of the Day, theme 'Angry Birds' (alt 'MyBestSide')

natureSep 13, 202631720,721

Today's Bird of the Day theme is Angry Birds, an any-bird-with-an-angry-face prompt with an alternate tag MyBestSide for profile shots. Submissions skew toward close-up bird portraits showing scowls and intense stares, from backyard cardinals and grackles to raptors and exotic profiles. Standouts include a female Merlin from Minneapolis in 2017 about to receive a dead songbird from her mate, a Snowy Egret hunting frenzy at Bombay Hook NWR on 7 August 2026, and a Hoopoe photographed in profile with its crest raised. Also featured are a broad-tailed hummingbird described as extremely angry, a white-throated sparrow from Central Park, and several hawks and jays locked in fierce glares.

It has a brown back and wings and the neck, chest and belly are a cream with distinctive brown, vertical bars throughout. A close-up of a red-shouldered hawk perched atop a weathered, dark tree snag against a solid, vibrant blue sky. The hawk is positioned in a striking three-quarter profile, with its body facing slightly right while its head turns upward and left, beak wide open as if calling out fiercely. Its breast features dense, warm rufous and cream horizontal barring, blending into a softer, downy texture near the legs. The wings are slightly dropped, revealing a bold black-and-white checkered pattern on the flight feathers. A heavily textured tail with broad dark and narrow white bands hangs down behind the gnarled wood. The lighting highlights the dramatic contours of its feathers and the fierce, intent expression on its face, giving the scene a distinct painterly quality.

The bird is centred in the frame, featuring glossy black plumage on its head and chest, sharply contrasted by a broad white collar extending down its back. Its eyes are intensely focused on the viewer, glowing a deep orange-amber colour. The light is strong and directional, catching the metallic sheen on its head and illuminating the white patch on its upper wing while casting the lower body into shadow. The background is a deeply blurred, dark, and moody blend of green and brown forest foliage.
