Bird of the Day, theme 'Mamas & Papas'

natureSep 14, 202622112,619

Bird of the Day is a daily community theme today called Mamas & Papas, asking photographers to show a male and female of the same species together. The gallery focuses on parenting and courtship scenes: nesting or brooding pairs, courting displays, and parent-offspring groups. Notable posts include a resident Bald Eagle pair perched overlooking the river, a mated pair of great blue herons showing affection at Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Florida, and Agami Herons preparing for nesting season in Costa Rica. Other entries show courting rainbow bee-eaters, Egyptian Geese with their brood, trumpeter swans with cygnets, and robins in a hawthorn bush.

Snuggled closely behind him on the right is a brown-and-tan female with a lighter orange-tinted beak, looking down toward the male. A pair of Great Crested Grebes on the water, one has two grebettes on its back; the other is offering them a quite large fish. The birds are near the foreground of the shot, the one carrying the grebettes is on the left looking right and the one with the fish is on the right, facing left. Both birds have a dark double crest on their heads and a chestnut/black collar on their necks. They have white cheeks and a long, slender bill. The neck is long and dark at the back and light at the front. The body is dark brown with a pale front. The Grebettes are black and white in a streaking pattern, giving them the name ‘Humbugs’ The bird on the right is offering a fish twice the size of the chicks heads. The rest of the shot is of lake water littered with different kinds of low growing pond weed which breaks up the surface of the water.

The photo shows two Mourning Doves standing close together on a rocky surface. Both birds have soft brown‑gray plumage with black spots on their wings and pink legs. They are facing each other with their bills touching, as if nuzzling. Green vegetation and scattered pine needles sit behind them.

A photo of a family of pied-billed grebes (Podilymbus podiceps) floating on calm green water together: two adults and two grebettes. The adults are fuzzy brown water birds with dark eyes and pale bills that have a dark vertical stripe down the center of them. They each face one of the downy, striped chicks that is attempting to swallow a fish larger than its head. The second chick floats in the background, out of focus, minding its own business.

Telephoto shot of two red-shouldered hawks perched side-by-side on a weathered tree snag under a clear sky. The hawk on its right sits slightly lower, turned in a three-quarter profile and looking directly toward its companion. The hawk on its left stands taller, facing forward and slightly to its right, making it appear as though they are looking at each other. Both birds display dense rufous-and-cream horizontal barring across their chests, leading to heavily patterned dark wings with white checkerboard spotting against a soft, completely out-of-focus background.
