Bob Mackie, the legendary costume and fashion designer known as the "Sultan of Sequins," died on September 14 at age 87. For more than half a century Mackie created sequined gowns and flamboyant costumes for stars including Cher, Carol Burnett, Diana Ross, Elton John, Marilyn Monroe, and others. He designed television-show looks that became iconic, including the curtain-rod dress for Carol Burnett, a choice Burnett and a recent documentary credit to Mackie. Cher posted a personal tribute calling him a dear friend and joking that he was "bringing Sequins, Beads, & his sketch pad." Liza Minnelli said Mackie dressed her through different chapters of her life and remained a friend. Broad recognition of his career appeared immediately in tributes and in-memoriam programming at major awards shows.
