Michael J. Fox receives Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at Emmys

At the 2026 Emmy Awards Michael J. Fox received the Television Academy's Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, presented onstage by Julianna Margulies. Fox accepted the honor with a speech that included the line "Accepting Parkinson's didn't mean I had to surrender to it," and he drew a standing ovation. Presenters and attendees noted Fox wore his Order of Canada pin while accepting the award. The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award is bestowed by the Television Academy and the Bob and Dolores Hope Charitable Foundation to a television industry figure whose philanthropic work mirrors Bob Hope's decades-long altruism; the Academy does not give the award every year and first presented it to Oprah Winfrey at the 54th Primetime Emmys in 2002. I like that the separate ceremony gives them time to award more people, including people who aren't necessarily well-known outside the industry, but it should still be televised.

Man, I hope the youngs still watch the early Michael J. Fox stuff. Don't just watch Back to the Future. Watch, like, Doc Hollywood. The Secret of My Success. Stuff that's fundamentally ordinary in which he is, individually, terrific. And as dated as Family Ties is in some ways, he's hilarious.
