Kyle Campbell wins Calgary-Shaw byelection, NDP flips UCP seat
Alberta - Kyle Campbell, the NDP candidate in Calgary-Shaw, has won the by-election. 🟠NDP FLIP
Danielle Smith suggested that if Avi Lewis became NDP leader, the Alberta NDP would be doomed forever Well Avi is leader, and she just lost a MASSIVE By-Election to the ANDP Things are looking up for the NDP across Canada!
That was +14 in 2023 and projection was +20 for tonight by 338. Huge upset. You love to see it.
LFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NENSHI I'M SO SORRY, WE WILL NOT DOUBT YOU AGAIN
Well we're definitely not getting an election until the last legally possible day
What am I missing here? Advance vote came in?
Better than the UCP traitorous pigs
HAHAHAHAHAH *sucks in a breath* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA But also *daaaaaamn* the UCP dropped about 10% support.
This is actually nuts. I lived in that riding for 2 decades. This is like Mordor flipping to the elves.
Way to go Alberta 🙌🏻
Well would you look at that
Apparently Polymarket isn’t the greatest predictor.😆 Anyone bet on the NDP?
This by-election in Calgary’s deep suburbs, in a seat UCP won last time by 14%, had potential to become either a clear warning about Danielle Smith and referendum politics in urban Alberta, or about the NDP leadership of Naheed Nenshi. And well whaddya know. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Of the 12 seats the UCP won in Calgary last election, only two of them were won by bigger margins than Shaw, which the NDP flipped in tonight’s prereferendum by-election. This result could make many Calgary cabinet ministers nervous.
That bitch has got to go
Seems Naheed knows his city.
In the face of everything the UCP has done outside of their '23 mandate, in addition to opening doors to the separatists, this win should be a check for the NDP. Put Pancholi out front, please. Nenshi doesn't have the energy for what's coming.
And about the Tory party syphoning votes
And Marlaina knew it was going to happen and thus started the Gerrymandering quest.
The only way to “win” whatever she’s got up her shelve on Oct 19th now will be cheating now, which she will do. But Calgary-Shaw is unexpected good news. #ableg #abpoli
Quote: "This result could make many Calgary cabinet ministers nervous." Please and thank you election deities. 🙏🏾 I'd like all those UCP cabinet ministers who weren't born in Canada but are also willingly supporting the racist referenda questions to feel very vulnerable; much like some Albertans.
There’s hope for you yet, Alberta!
I clicked on this only to find out that the UCP candidate stole the Alberta Party's "The Big Listen" idea? 😂 "It didn't work for Michael Walters, and my party is governing with an extremely heavy hand, let's give it a go!"
I was prepared for utter disappointment. Now I'm feeling pretty darn good. Thank you Calgary Shaw voters!
it's not very often I wake up to good news! 😊
Tonight shows that Alberta's NDP is building huge momentum here in Calgary, and across the province. We know better is possible. The historic result in Calgary-Shaw proves it. Thank you to Kyle and to every single person who put in the work to get us here. /1
Our team, led by @kylecampbellyyc.bsky.social ran a strong campaign, winning Calgary-Shaw over by focusing on what truly matters to them. Thank you to everyone who put in the work to get us here. Tonight, we celebrate. Tomorrow, we'll keep building the better future we all deserve.
Good. Out of the dark.
#ableg trivia: Calgary-Shaw tonight was only the second time ever that the Alberta NDP picked up a seat in a by-election. The first was Pincher Creek-Crowsnest(!) in 1966.
NDP wins Calgary-Shaw. Advanced votes swung hard for the NDP. Final total NDP 7461 UCP 6879 Tory 978 Liberal 602.
Advanced polls NDP 3560 UCP 2705.
Pretty disappointing 43% still voted UCP.
OMG, didn’t see that coming! If this riding is in play, so many ridings in the province could swing orange!! 🍊
Someone please explain to me why 602 people voted for the Alberta Liberals.
The historic number of mail in ballot requests for the fall referendum will likely follow the same trend. 🎉
Who the f$&k are the 602 people still voting for the Liberal party of Alberta?
Wowzers! The uppance doth come when you dance with the seppies that brung ya.
Lololol lol gasping sounds lolololololol lololololol
Okay i'll shut the fuck up. Calgary, Small w.
WTF, south Clagary is slightly to the right of Bush. People must really hate the Separatist branch of the UCP.
As I watch the results of the Calgary Shaw by-election trickle in, I suspect, and perhaps more importantly, I hope that several political parties will be holding strategy meetings first thing tomorrow morning and taking a hard look at their respective choices of party leaders.
If nothing else, it should be a moment for the UCP to descend into internecine warfare. And a signal to Carney that he needs to be more aggressive with Smith, she’s weak.
Did the NDP just win Calgary Shaw?
I was watching as the last 25 polling stations were coming in. At one point the UCP had a 3 vote lead which was somewhat terrifying. So glad this was the outcome. Is it going to be another sequel of "Knives Out" for Danni? One can hope.
Maybe it’s time for you to seriously consider a run at the federal level Thomas….as a Liberal. You’ve definitely built name recognition and a massive following of support, not just in Alberta but across this country. Now wouldn’t that upset the proverbial apple cart?!
While I appreciate your actions on the separatist issue you are a conservative and maybe you should focus on fixing your own party. Ndp just had a big win—that riding went +14 UCP last time.
Any chance you'd throw your name into the hat?
With a margin of 582 votes, the NDP have taken the traditionally conservative stronghold Calgary Shaw, formerly held by Rebecca Schultz. #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli
"Time to redraw the ridings.' The Premier
This is an amazing result, cue the UCP challenging the result in court.
16000 out of 40234 cared enough to vote. 39% or so. I suppose that's good for a byelection. You gotta show up. But it did beat projections. Reassuring that UCP isn't the default.
Could be they are Nenshi fans but it's a win and I'll take it. I also hope it is a sign that things are turning around for UCP and people are seeing them for what they are.
I sincerely hope the Tory party continues to grow, and keeps playing the part of spoiler in splitting the conservative vote
Great news this morning to start off. The monsters are going to demand a recount.
NEW: Alberta NDP takes Calgary-Shaw from the UCP, as Kyle Campbell defeats Mike Derry. Seat was vacated after former UCP minister Rebecca Schulz stepped down, who had twice won the riding.
Well done @kylecampbellyyc.bsky.social, @naheednenshi.bsky.social, and @albertandp.ca. 👏🏾🧡🍊 UCP asks for a recount in 3... 2... 1...
There is no sane world where the UCP are allowed anywhere near government, but this isn’t a sane world, so I’ll take any small victory I can celebrate.
Looks like I'll be able to avoid the horrible new 'citizenship driver's license' next year after all.
Are you listening yet, Premier Smith? Because Calgary-Shaw just sent you a message. #ableg #yyc #yeg
I. Am. In. Shock. AND THRILLED ABOUT IT!
Turns out separatism is not popular in Calgary
Omg. This is promising! If Dani’s back from Tennessee I hope she’s having a very bad night. Deep South suburban Calgary… the seppies are not winning anything.
Peter Guthrie et al syphoned off a win … 43% voting against their own interests is concerning
Love this for you, Yankee Doodle Dani. You so so so deserve it. May it be the beginning of the end for your party of blatant corruption and cruelty.
Dave Cournoyer: "It is impossible not to interpret the Calgary-Shaw by-election results as a backlash by Calgary voters against Premier Danielle Smith’s Alberta separation referendum." daveberta.substack.com/p/wow-just-w...
*whistling* The world is closing in And did you ever think That we could be so close, like brothers? The future's in the air I can feel it everywhere Blowing with the wind of change Take me to the magic of the moment On a glory night Where the children of tomorrow dream away In the wind of change
from the comments: "One thing you hear a lot at the doors in South Calgary is that people might vote NDP, but dont want a lawn sign, because they are worried about conflict with their neighbours. But once NDP signs start popping up, people realize there are a lot more people who are also supportive"
