Los Angeles County prosecutors announced they will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner in the fatal stabbings of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Reiner. District Attorney Nathan Hochman told reporters the office considered the wishes of surviving family members when reaching the decision. Nick Reiner, 33, was indicted by a grand jury on July 20 and the indictment, unsealed August 12, alleges he was lying in wait before attacking his parents. Rob and Michele Reiner were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home in December, and Nick Reiner was arrested the same day and has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. Prosecutors said the maximum penalty they will now seek is life in prison without parole. The announcement came shortly before a scheduled pretrial hearing where a judge is expected to set a preliminary trial date and consider various pleadings in the case.
