OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman told a Salesforce conference in San Francisco that "the world should trust that we are going to do the right thing" on artificial intelligence, while also saying people are "right to be afraid" because AI capability has advanced rapidly. Altman said he is confident his company and the industry can keep "alignment and safety way ahead of capabilities" and that firms would "slow down or stop" if they could not. His remarks followed a widely read post from an Anthropic researcher who quit and warned AI could kill all humans by the end of the decade, a claim that prompted Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei to call for a slowdown and for government regulation. Politicians including Senator Bernie Sanders and former White House strategist Steve Bannon urged stronger public governance rather than industry self-regulation. After Altman's comments, Mark Zuckerberg wrote that AI labs have incentives and liability to build safer models and that labs failing on alignment will fall behind. In recent days several AI leaders have expressed support for industry-led safety measures, but political voices continue to press for external oversight.
