Mathematician debunks Parthenon optical illusion myth

Prof Alain Goriely of the University of Oxford published a paper in Royal Society Open Science concluding that widely cited optical-correction claims about the Parthenon are unfounded. Goriely traces the story back to Vitruvius and says the supposed illusions are either nonexistent or practically imperceptible. Measurements show the stylobate rises about 6 cm at the centre and the columns’ entasis bulges by roughly 18 mm, changes too small to produce the claimed visual effects at typical viewing distances. Goriely tested two proposed mechanisms, a general midline “sag” perception and a three-dimensional version of the Hering illusion caused by the columns, and found no evidence they operate on the Parthenon. He suggests practical or aesthetic motives instead, for example preventing rain puddles on the base or preferring gently curved forms, and invites readers to judge for themselves. The paper notes modern retellings, including AI chatbots, keep repeating the Vitruvian account, so the study challenges a long-standing explanatory myth and redirects inquiry toward functional and stylistic explanations for the temple’s curves.
