Sony Pictures confirmed Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reached a domestic total of $936.773 million, overtaking 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing movie ever in North America. The film hit that mark 47 days after release, far quicker than The Force Awakens, which took 165 days to reach its eventual domestic total. Brand New Day opened as the first Spider-Man movie in five years and the MCU’s release immediately before Avengers: Doomsday, and it stars Tom Holland and Zendaya. The movie slipped to number two on weekday charts after children returned to school but still earned $8.4 million over the most recent weekend. Sony says the film will continue playing in theaters, and analysts in the piece project it could add another roughly $10 million to its domestic haul. The record reshuffles the North American box office leaderboard and sets a new benchmark for upcoming tentpoles to chase.
