RIP, Peter Max, the only graphic artist I can think of whose brand was so omnipresent that he managed to get his own cereal. Reid Miles never got a cereal. Hipgnosis never got a cereal. Roy Kuhlman never got a cereal. Only Peter Max. His work graced everything from earrings to phone books.

As a child in the 1970s, I slept on Peter Max’s groovy “Star Dreamer” sheets and carried one of his far-out psychedelic “Flower Power” overnight cases to sleepovers. Thank you to Peter Max, for giving me such a colorful and vibrant pop-art childhood. It was a kaleidoscopic time to be alive.

I met Peter Max a few times, over a decade ago. The bulk of his career was behind him, and he mostly had assistants creating his paintings at that point, but when you invent an iconic style that helped define a generation, it stays yours forever.
