Bird of the Day, theme 'Odg'

natureSep 17, 202621110,415

Bird of the Day is a daily community event with the theme ODG, meaning any Owl, Duck, or Goose. Today's gallery features close-up owls showing calm or hunting poses, dabbling and diving ducks including a male Mandarin Duck in eclipse plumage, and geese on shorelines or in coordinated flight. Standout entries include a snowy owl conveying serenity, a burrowing owl hunched under a bush, and Canada geese flying in unison. Look for specific species like Blakiston's fish owl, a Hooded Merganser, and a Goosander under the #ODG hashtag.

A snowy owl perched on a log with green branches behind it. The owl is white with small black specks on it, and its tail looks to be a little bit dirty as it is darker than the rest of the bird. It is facing the left and one eye is barely visible.

A Canada geese family in some dirt near a lake. The parent is standing facing right, closer to the lake you barely see at the top of the photo. Three fuzzy yellow babies are lined up in a row in the foreground, evenly spaced. Two are lying down looking sleepy. The one on the left just in front of the parent is standing up and pecking the grass, facing left. There's some green grasses at the top of the photo and some bare brown bushes on the sides of the photo.

At the moment the duck is in full transformation mode from its dull brown plumage during summer and in a few weeks', time will completely change into full breeding plumage. Key Features Beak: The bright red or orange beak stays the same, which is the easiest way to tell it is a male. Head and Crest: The colourful crest and purple head feathers disappear, leaving a drab brownish-grey head. The "Sails": The famous large orange upright feathers on the back are gone. Body: The bright orange, purple, and white flanks turn into a muted, mottled brown and grey pattern. Why It Happens Camouflage: The dull colours help the duck hide from predators in the reeds during summer. Flightless Period: Ducks moult their flight feathers all at once during this time and cannot fly for a few weeks, making good disguise vital.
