Bird of the Day is running the theme ODG, meaning submissions must show an owl, a duck, or a goose; Alan set today’s prompt. Entries focus on close wildlife photography and field shots, with many owls in hunting or calm poses, colourful duck drakes, and geese in riverside or nesting scenes. Concrete examples in the gallery include a burrowing owl hunched under a bush, a male Mandarin Duck in eclipse plumage photographed 16/09/26 at Forest Farm Nature Reserve in Cardiff, and a pair of Egyptian Geese that took over an empty Mute Swan’s nest at Bough Beech reservoir. So Alan have set the theme for #BirdOfTheDay on #ODG any owl,duck or geese. No Alt #ECK #Birds #mobilephonephotography The largest owl we have here in the Netherlands is the Eurasian eagle owl. This is a rescued owl in the Almere Jungle in Almere.

You see here a lovely Eurasian eagle owl. Wit the stuffed feathers on its head are for communication and camouflage. It are not its ears. His feathers are fromm a wonderful golden brown colour. He is sitting hig up in his enclosure.

At the moment the duck is in full transformation mode from its dull brown plumage during summer and in a few weeks', time will completely change into full breeding plumage.

Key Features

Beak: The bright red or orange beak stays the same, which is the easiest way to tell it is a male.

Head and Crest:

The colourful crest and purple head feathers disappear, leaving a drab brownish-grey head.

The "Sails":

The famous large orange upright feathers on the back are gone.

Body:

The bright orange, purple, and white flanks turn into a muted, mottled brown and grey pattern.
Why It Happens

Camouflage:

The dull colours help the duck hide from predators in the reeds during summer.

Flightless Period:

Ducks moult their flight feathers all at once during this time and cannot fly for a few weeks, making good disguise vital.
