The BBC has published an invitation to tender for the production of Doctor Who, seeking a multi-episodic series including specials for transmission in 2028/29 and offering an option to extend for a second series at the BBC’s discretion. The contract is offered on a work-for-hire basis, with the BBC retaining broadcast rights. Bidders must qualify the production as regional under two of Ofcom’s three regional criteria and are expected to establish a production base in the agreed region; the BBC expresses a preference for Wales qualification. The invitation requires initial eligibility information to be submitted via Microsoft Forms and provides a Competitive Tendering contact for queries. The deadline for initial submissions is 2pm on 2 October 2026. The BBC frames the tender as part of its Charter commitment to open up more content to competition and to strengthen production across the UK. A final production team decision is expected by March 2027 ahead of the planned 2028/29 transmission window.

The Doctor Who tender invitation is out, contrary to all those people who told me the show was dead and I was deluded to think the BBC had any intention of keeping it going. Broadcast target 2028/29, tight turnaround for submissions - just two weeks. www.bbc.co.uk/commissionin...
