Warren E. Buffett, 96, resigned immediately as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and was named chairman emeritus, according to Berkshire and news reports. Howard G. Buffett, Buffett’s son, succeeds him as chairman; Berkshire said the change follows a long-standing succession plan. Buffett has held the chairman post since 1970, a span noted in reporting, and wrote in a letter to shareholders “Father Time always wins.” Berkshire will continue to be led day-to-day by CEO Greg Abel, who remains in that role. Buffett will remain on Berkshire’s board as chairman emeritus, the company said.
