The Archers: Carol dies in latest episode

No it's a real thing. People who are very frail and often have a good day right before they die. People with dementia can become lucid for that short period. Some families find it comforting to have the good day but others find it more confusing as they thinks it's recovery. #TheArchers

In Alan’s defence - right at the beginning, it’s established that the nurses know Carol is not feeling well, despite having been given painkillers, they too have also been trying to get hold of Anna. Alan then texted Usha as well. Carol tells him that she’s not frightened & agrees #TheArchers 1/2

My mother (very elderly, frail, dementia) had a lucid half day about two days before she died. She was able to tell me she was ready, which I found hugely comforting because she’d always been terrified of death 😥. #TheArchers

My uncle also died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday night/Friday morning #TheArchers

That's what I've read, along with advice to relatives if there to say goodbyes rather than try to hold them back from going. Hospice workers talk about the 'labour' of dying and so Alan saying 'relax and let go' was probably helpful in the active dying process. #TheArchers

Anna might also suddenly reframe Alan's golden powers of persuasion. Gossip will be circulating that the stress had sent into desperate measures. The outrage of the entrance fee was 'daylight robbery'. Poor Alan. Dr Locke had a similar story, but this takes it up a notch! #TheArchers

Give poor Alan a break! He persevered with that dreadful selfish old bat for months & months. She was lucky to find someone kind enough to be with her when she was dying. He would have alerted the staff. If my mum was in hospital NO way I would have my phone on silent, so that’s on Anna.#TheArchers

Exactly! I was shouting at the radio to get a doctor or nurse… which he had clearly done off air. I do feel for poor Anna though as she will forever wish she’d checked her phone while they were having coffee and cake! #TheArchers
