President Donald Trump told supporters at a Sept. 16 rally in Gastonia, North Carolina that high gas prices are a "very inexpensive price to pay" for the ongoing war on Iran, saying "it’s a little more. Frankly, even if it was a lot more." The national average price of regular gasoline was $4.46 per gallon on Sept. 18, according to AAA, up from $4.29 one week earlier and from $3.20 on Sept. 18, 2025. A Gallup poll in June 2026 found 67% of respondents said gas price increases caused them financial hardship, and an April ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos survey reported 44% of adults had cut back on driving because of pump prices. The USA TODAY analysis notes Americans spent an average $13,318 on transportation at the end of 2024 and that prewar forecasts had expected 2026 gas to average $2.97, with households projected to spend $2,083 on gas; at $4.46 per gallon those household gas costs rise to about $3,182 annually, roughly $1,000 higher than forecast. The White House has taken specific steps amid voter concern, launching 25 Freedom Fuel stations in July selling fuel at $3.47 per gallon concentrated in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and urging Congress in a June 24 budget request to authorize year-round sales of E15 gasoline. The administration has also publicly pressured retailers over pump pricing as gasoline and diesel volatility continues following U.S. strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, when the national average was $2.98 per gallon.
