CNN, MS NOW and Politico told the Trump administration they are filing a First Amendment lawsuit to restore journalists’ White House credentials after the White House revoked their access. The outlets will ask a federal judge in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia for emergency relief, including a temporary restraining order, with hearings and legal arguments possible as soon as this week. In a draft of the complaint the organizations say the ban was imposed "without notice or process" because the White House objected to their reporting and that it violates the First Amendment and the Constitution’s due process protections. The filing notes reporters were deactivated from White House grounds, CNN and MS NOW were blocked from using on-site television equipment and camera locations, and CNN was removed from pooled coverage duties and a planned trip with the president to New York. The outlets say the ban threatens other news organizations because the administration signaled it might add more outlets to the list, and the suit argues the public suffers when access to government information is restricted.
