Nicky Hager book launch at Unity Books in Wellington tonight

Investigative journalist Nicky Hager will unveil his latest book at Unity Books in central Wellington today at 6pm, though details of the new title remain a mystery. Taxpayers’ Union chief executive Jordan Williams publicly addressed circulating “rumours” that his organisation will feature in the book, saying he is “flattered we may have finally made the cut” and that the group has “nothing to hide.” Williams pointed to a July 26, 2023, Taxpayers’ Union press release that said Hager had approached former staff and outlined alleged topics to be included, such as connections with other groups, donor secrecy, foreign influence and funding. Taxpayers’ Union chair Laurie Kubiak previously accused Hager of “personal animosity” toward Williams and noted the group has “hundreds of thousands of subscribed supporters, and more than 23,000 donors.” The article notes Hager’s track record, including 2014’s Dirty Politics and 2002’s Seeds of Distrust, and recalls that police apologised and paid “substantial damages” to Hager in 2018 after unlawfully searching his home during the Dirty Politics investigation. Tonight’s launch at Unity Books is the immediate occasion that could confirm whether the Taxpayers’ Union and the topics Williams flagged appear in Hager’s new book.
