Meta blocks Barcelona theatre ads for Virginia Woolf play

Teatre Raval in Barcelona was prevented from promoting a stage adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own on Facebook and Instagram after Meta’s automated system flagged mentions of “civil rights, feminism or social reform” as ‘social topics’ and filtered the ads. Meta told the theatre the blockage was automatic and recommended removing “key words” so the text would not appear to encourage activism. The production is a one-woman show starring Clara Sanchis; the theatre seats 193 spectators. Teatre Raval said the ban amounted to an injustice that violates its rights and warned that relying on social media for cultural publicity leaves institutions vulnerable. The plays’ source material derives from Woolf’s 1928 talks at Newnham and Girton, published in 1929 on women’s access to education; women could study at Cambridge from 1869 but could not graduate with a degree until 1948. Sanchis told La Vanguardia she did not know whether the rejection was triggered by the name Virginia Woolf, the word feminism, or both, and called the decision a form of erasure of long-fought social advances.
