The 2026 autumnal equinox arrives on Tuesday, September 22, with the precise moment falling in the evening according to the U.S. Naval Observatory. The equinox brings roughly equal hours of day and night as autumn begins in the Northern Hemisphere and spring begins in the Southern Hemisphere. In some U.S. cities laid out on east, west grids, sunrises and sunsets align with wide streets and framed canyons of tall buildings, producing phenomena photographers call "Chicagohenge," Michelle Nichols of the Adler Planetarium says. Geoff Boeing, chair of urban planning at the University of Southern California, notes the modern alignments echo ancient celestial observances such as sunrise at Stonehenge. Cities beyond Chicago, including Washington, D.C. and Phoenix, can produce similar henge moments because of their grid layouts. Scholars have documented that historic cities like Tenochtitlan were planned with astronomical knowledge, and modern viewers gather once or twice a year to watch these seasonal alignments.
