YouTube, TikTok and Meta refused paid trailer ads for Alex Gibney’s two-part, four-hour documentary Musk, which is scheduled for release October 9 and distributed by Bleecker Street. X also declined to take Bleecker Street’s calls about the buy, and the distributor is appealing the platforms’ decisions, which the platforms cited as related to political content. Musk premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival; Rolling Stone called the film “a nonfiction horror movie.” Elon Musk has publicly attacked the film, calling it a “hit piece” and a “psy op.” Supporters and some critics have urged sharing the trailer and promoting screenings after the platforms’ refusals, while Bleecker Street pursues the appeal.
