The Texas Tribune identified Gregory Feathers as the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent witnesses say fired through an open van window and killed 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston this summer. An official familiar with the investigation who was not authorized to speak publicly and several records including a mistakenly released Form I-213 corroborated Feathers as the shooter and as one of two arresting agents. Feathers was rehired within the past two years after previously retiring, a rehiring that overlapped with the second Trump administration’s recruitment of former ICE officers. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has defended the shooting as self-defense; Feathers has not been charged. Harris County’s district attorney is empaneling a grand jury that could bring criminal charges, while the Texas Department of Public Safety, the FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and DHS are all probing the incident. Feathers’s attorney, Nicole DeBorde Hochglaube, declined to comment, saying DHS policy prevents him from speaking during a pending investigation. The Tribune said it published the name because federal authorities have withheld identities of most ICE agents involved in shootings, leaving local lawmakers and investigators without answers.
