UK PM Burnham to reform state pension triple lock from 2030
So he really is ending the triple lock eh. Fair play.
Sounded like a sort of 2 and half lock. Inflation or 2.5% and "earnings over time".
Pensioner here. Fair enough. Need to sort things so generation rent can be okay when it’s their turn.
I’d like to see the detailed financials on this. I just can’t see that ending the triple lock, but maintaining cost of living rises for pensioners, is anything like enough to fund the sort of care changes people are expecting from the rhetoric. There’s got to be more that we’re not being told.
If he's ending triple lock to fund social care, he could just be shifting from cash to benefits in kind for essentially the same people. That might soften the blow.
Sounds like he’s ending the calling of it the Triple Lock. If it sticks with 2.5%, inflation and earnings it’s still the Triple Lock. He needs to specifically state what he’s dropping.
Too late to avoid disaster but needed.
it might backfire horribly on him but if so, boy is Andy Burnham going out with a bang. Do wonder if that speech could only have been made by someone who was out of Westminster for the madness years & isn't as scared of the public - he's gambling on them still grudgingly respecting conviction
Given the extent to which Restore, Reform and the Greens have at times surged in support, I don't think there's any great lack of support for conviction politics. But the big difference, of course, is that Burnham in No 10 has to deliver on it, not just agitate. Still, highly impressive.
Personally I absolutely love it. Brave and exciting. The exact opposite of the past and a positibe message that might push the fascists off the front page every day.
Pensions are going up 3.9% because they have a Triple Lock NHS drug prices have been going up at an average rate of 5-7% a year, EVERY year, for the last 16 years We don't talk about this 'TRIPLE LOCK'. Which has cost the NHS tens of billions Because it is for the BILLIONAIRES
How does it work? Every year the drugs companies increase the price of their drugs to the NHS by double inflation or more. And the Government just goes along with this scam, and we all know why $$$.
NHS drug cost is ballooning out of control and it is one of the biggest factors the NHS has 'no money'. But of course this benefit to billionaires isn't unaffordable. It isn't even mentioned.
Drop the triple lock/create a national care service is a proper policy offer. But I am slightly confused about setting out a manifesto for 2028/29 in late 2026 with years of governing still to go.
Same with electoral reform. A strong speech. But in many ways felt more like the speech of a new leader of the opposition rather than a new PM with years to go in office before an election.
Fiscal air cake today; crunchy reform policy tomorrow
To me it screams the plan was till recently to have an election end of this year or spring next year. Events have blown that possibility out of the water probably but the strategy hasn’t changed. Like you I can’t see the strategy of announcing big stuff for a manifesto three years off.
Yes, squandering a majority that is not likely to get any bigger with objectives potentially at the mercy of coalition discussions?
BREAKING: Burnham says the triple lock for state pensions will be reformed from April 2030.
I see they're ending the pensions triple lock from 2030 while claiming not to be ending the pensions triple lock
IFS: "It is great news that Andy Burnham has neutered the worst element of the triple lock. Goodbye to the unsustainable ‘ratchet’ effect. State pensions will still rise, but more sustainably."
Still the worst state pension in Europe. What a win.
If you don't like it then don't vote Labour in 2029. That's why it's a manifesto item. It's democracy in action.
I think it's quite canny. Pensioners - I speak as one - are scared that they won't be able to afford care; or if they can, that it will erode their children's legacy. By linking the end of the triple lock to comprehensive care provision, Labour is replacing one failsafe with another, better one
