to anybody in the UK aghast by the news about Cornell or US fraternities, i hope you realise that expensive universities with exclusive societies and the public schools (with attached cadet forces) that feed them are just as bad, if not worse.

'In his [Ivison's] view, the government is avoiding the bigger issues of what universities are for and who should pay for them.' It would help if universities would ask (and answer) that 1st big question in public rather than just parroting government. That's what institutional autonomy is for.

Feels like this is getting closer and closer in the UK as well. And as @animalarchaeology.com so correctly pointed out, this only happens when university leadership participates in the reframing of universities as job-factories rather than places of education and learning.
