Burnham 'really concerned' if Man City owners sell up

sportsSep 30, 202623415

Andy Burnham said he would be "really concerned" if Manchester City owners decided to sell the club after an independent commission found City guilty of the majority of the 115 charges it faced. Burnham praised the club's owners since 2008, led by Sheikh Mansour, for investing in Manchester and said his past interactions with them while mayor would "stand up to scrutiny." The commission found City used "sham contracts" with commercial partners to disguise secret funding of more than £830 million, and the Premier League said City "systematically broke Premier League Rules for nearly a decade." City deny wrongdoing and have until 2 October to submit an appeal; a separate sanctions hearing by the independent panel could take months to convene. The Independent Football Regulator, created by the government in 2025, said the case raised "serious issues" and indicated it may consider options including revoking the owners' licence once the disciplinary process is complete. Possible punishments listed by the panel include a large fine, points deductions, ejection from the Premier League, or stripping the eight trophies won in the affected period.
