Google Maps updated its satellite imagery in June 2026 to show wide-scale destruction across the Gaza Strip, revealing collapsed buildings, tented displacement camps and ruined infrastructure. The images show huge tented camps lining much of the shoreline, Gaza’s damaged main port emptied of fishing boats, and shacks and tents filling available open space in Gaza City. Northern towns including Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoun and neighbourhoods such as Jabaliya and Shuja’iya appear uninhabitable, and the Istiqlal mosque in Khan Younis is shown destroyed. Rafah and Tel al-Sultan are largely reduced to rubble, while a cleared strip appears along the border with Egypt. UNRWA says about 82 percent of structures in Gaza, roughly 200,000 buildings, have been damaged, with about two thirds destroyed, and more than 2.1 million displaced people are living in tents and temporary shelters. The UN’s rubble estimate of 61 million tonnes and the continued presence of human remains under debris highlight urgent humanitarian and clearance challenges, and a UN assessment found the number of destroyed structures rose by 9 percent since the October 2025 ceasefire.
