Florence Pugh leads Netflix's East of Eden adaptation

Florence Pugh stars as Cathy Ames in Zoe Kazan’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel East of Eden, which debuted on Netflix and opened with a New York premiere. The Guardian review calls the series lavishly shot and full of excellent performances while arguing it favors soapy family-saga momentum over Steinbeck’s philosophical heft. Pugh’s Cathy is introduced in the opening scene as a beaten, bloodied woman who crawls toward the Trask farm and upends Adam Trask, played by Christopher Abbott, and his brother Charles, played by Mike Faist; their father Cyrus is played by Tracy Letts. The review describes episode two unspooling Cathy’s torrid backstory, including prostitution, arson, faked death and abandoned children, and frames Kazan’s version as embracing the novel’s soap-opera energy. Zoe Kazan, the granddaughter of director Elia Kazan, wrote the series; press coverage and premiere photos highlighted Pugh’s central, scene-stealing performance. Separately, Pugh spoke about the series in interviews and discussed the importance of failing as part of her approach to the role.
