Truckers say a diesel fill-up can top $1,000 as prices surge

Truckers report single diesel fill-ups topping $1,000 as diesel prices surge, forcing some owner-operators to stay on the road for months and others to park their rigs. Industry sources say diesel has climbed above $6 per gallon, squeezing independent drivers who pay fuel directly and have little bargaining power. Owner-operators say the spike is battering drivers who deliver food, construction materials, medical supplies, electronics and agricultural products. Some small carriers have temporarily halted routes or reduced runs because fuel costs make trips unprofitable. Texas declared a statewide disaster over diesel prices and allowed truckers to fill up with home heating oil. The combination of parked rigs and cutback routes is already reducing hauling capacity and risks further disruption to supply chains and deliveries.
