Conservatives propose scrapping Environment Agency and Natural England

politicsOct 5, 2026381,545

At the Conservative party conference the shadow chancellor, Andrew Griffith, pledged to abolish Natural England and the Environment Agency and to “streamline regulations” governing nature and development. The party said it would scrap rules that oblige developers to include affordable homes and community facilities, replace section 106 agreements and the community infrastructure levy with a single “one stop” levy, and remove net zero building requirements such as the Future Homes Standard. The platform includes backing expansion of Heathrow and a promise to leave the Aarhus convention, which the party said makes it easier for community groups to oppose developments. Leader Kemi Badenoch published a policy tract called The Right Way as the organising blueprint for the approach, which the party frames as a bid to refocus on economic growth. Conservatives claim the measures would cut the price of a new home by about £50,000 and describe the package as the most ambitious deregulation project in a generation. The pledges follow polling that leaves the party third behind Labour and Reform UK and signal a shift toward prioritising housebuilding and infrastructure over existing environmental safeguards.

The pitch here seems to be, ‘we’ll build the houses and infrastructure we failed to build during the 14 years we were in government, but we’ll do it in the most damaging and lowest quality way possible’. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

This would be a utterly insane change that both entirely misunderstands the issues we have with housebuilding and tne role of the EA/Natural England. Particularly given the huge additional responsibilities we've just given the latter. Hammer blow for nature and the enviroment for no good reason
