57th anniversary of Monty Python's Flying Circus

comedyOct 5, 202641238

Monty Python's Flying Circus first aired on 5 October 1969, the debut episode subtitled "Whither Canada?" and broadcast just before 11 PM. The sketch troupe credited in posts are Terry Jones, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin. The television run produced 45 episodes from 1969 to 1974 plus two additional episodes for German television. Posts mark the group’s lasting visibility through frequent citations of specific sketches and songs such as the Spanish Inquisition sketch, the Lumberjack Song, the killer rabbit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the films Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Contributors recall first-time viewings and ongoing quotation of lines including Michael Palin’s “Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.” One post notes Graham Chapman publicly came out on live British television in 1972, at a moment when homosexuality had only been partially decriminalized five years earlier. The body of posts shows the series and its films remain actively shown, quoted and discussed more than five decades after the first broadcast.
