World Teachers' Day was observed October 5 with tributes, classroom stories and local events honoring educators. UNESCO established World Teachers' Day in 1994 to recognize teachers' role in student and community life. In British Columbia, The Tyee ran a giveaway of six Canadian children's and youth books sponsored by the BC Teachers' Federation, with the Vancouver Writers Fest providing the books; the federation represents more than 52,000 public school teachers across over 70 local unions. Union and political groups marked the day as well, including the American Federation of Teachers issuing a message of thanks and calls for respect and resources for educators. Local organizers staged in-person actions in some places; a post reports thousands gathered at the McDougall Centre in downtown Calgary on October 5, 2025 for a rally ahead of a province-wide strike. Commenters and officials used the hashtag #WorldTeachersDay to share personal teacher tributes and to highlight demands such as improved working conditions and support for student learning. Schools and students posted classroom notes and thank-you messages, urging people to name educators who made a difference and to offer concrete support for the profession.
